Taking on more responsibility

From Special Olympics and rodeos to turtle races and World Cup soccer, I’ve covered just about every Summer competition possible in the 1 ½ months I’ve been at the St. Cloud Times.

I’ve been working with the sports and life teams at the Times and have found every experience -- including turtle races -- to be a learning experience, which is exactly what I’m here for.

To some, covering turtle races isn't exactly something to be proud of. But for me, I loved it. I got to see first hand what my job does for the community, and I’ve run into many challenges along the way.

I’ve taken on more responsibility than I did when I was an intern here last Summer. I’ve often been made the go-to-person for others arriving at the newspaper.

The executive and managing editors asked me to speak with a young woman interested in being an intern at the Times. It was a perfect opportunity to share my experience as a Times’ intern and a Chips Quinn Scholar. It also gave me a chance to open a door for the prospective intern.

At this point in my internship, I’ve accomplished much more than I expected. I hope to do as much -- and maybe even more -- before I leave.
